Bishop of St Albans asks about increased rates of tuberculosis in Sudan

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 16th June 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the surge in tuberculosis cases in Sudan; and what steps they are taking to provide medical aid to that country.

Lord Goldsmith of Richmond Park (Con): The FCDO is tracking the risk of a rise in tuberculosis cases in Sudan, resulting from increased displacement of people and the lack of access now to treatment facilities following the outbreak of conflict on 15 April. The UK remains one of the top global donors to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which is continuing its work to support people in Sudan, although access in the current circumstances is extremely difficult. The FCDO is using our full diplomatic reach to secure humanitarian access and end the violence. We are in regular contact with the Global Fund and are coordinating with the international humanitarian system to support them and other partners to be able to scale-up delivery within Sudan, including of medical supplies, if and when the access situation improves.
