On 28th June 2023, the House of Lords debated the Illegal Migration Bill in the first day of the report stage. Votes were held on amendments to the bill, in which Bishops took part:

The Bishop of Manchester, the Bishop of Chelmsford, and the Bishop of Southwark took part in a vote on amendment 5, tabled by Baroness Chakrabarti, to replace clause 1 of the bill with a new introduction ensuring compliance with the UK’s international obligations.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Bishop of Chelmsford, and the Bishop of Southwark took part in a vote on an amendment tabled by Lord Carlile of Berriew, which would ensure that the duty to deport in clause 2 of the bill would not apply retrospectively to those who entered or arrived into the UK before the bill comes into force.
