Bishop of St Albans asks about removal of VAT on defibrillators

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 22nd October 2024:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government whether they have plans to remove VAT on defibrillators.

Lord Livermore (Lab, Treasury): The Government currently provides VAT reliefs to aid the purchase of defibrillators. This means that charities pay no VAT if they purchase a defibrillator and then donate it to an eligible body.

VAT is a broad-based tax on consumption, and exceptions to the standard rate have always been limited and balanced against affordability considerations. The Government keeps all tax under review, and any changes will be announced at fiscal events.
