On 2nd July 2025, the House of Lords debated the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill in report. Votes were held on amendments to the bill, in which Bishops took part:

Division 1:
House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill
The Bishop of Guildford and the Bishop of Norwich took part in a vote on an amendment tabled by Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay to insert a new clause into the bill which “would amend the House of Lords Act 1999 to abolish the system of by-elections for hereditary peers. This would prevent any new hereditary peers from joining the House, while allowing those who are presently serving in the House to remain. It follows the proposals of the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) (Abolition of By-Elections) Bill.
The amendment was agreed. Content: 280 / Not Content: 243
The Bishop of Norwich and the Bishop of Guildford voted Content.
Division 2:
The Bishop of Guildford and the Bishop of Norwich took part in a vote on an amendment tabled by Lord Newby which would “impose a duty on Ministers to take forward proposals to secure a democratic mandate for the House of Lords through introduction of directly elected members.”
The amendment was disagreed. Content: 84 / Not Content: 263
The Bishop of Guildford and the Bishop of Norwich voted Not Content.
