Week in Westminster 29th October – 2nd November

Westminster-abbeyThis week in the House of Lords bishops asked questions about support for children with a parent in prison, the delay in lowering the stakes on betting machines, and on rail fares. They spoke in debates on problem gambling and the impact on family life of reductions in welfare benefits. The Bishop of  Newcastle welcomed the creation of the new North of Tyne combined authority.

Week in Westminster, 22nd-26th October 2018

This week in the House of Lords the Bishop of Bristol was introduced as a new Member, and bishops asked questions about the impact of Brexit on food security and the impact of citizenship fees on children’s welfare. The Bishop of St Albans joined Peers in calling for the reduction in betting machine stakes to be introduced without further delay. The Second Church Estates Commissioner, Rt Hon Dame Caroline Spelman MP, led a debate in the House of Commons on allowing asylum seekers the right to work. Week in Westminster, 15th-19th October 2018

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on religious intolerance and prejudice, and on music education. They asked questions about prisoner activities, Yorkshire devolution, Brexit, religious literacy in asylum claim processing, Burundi, and cases of sexual abuse.  In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions on Wonga, religious freedom, community use of churchyards, First World War commemorations, social housing, Salisbury Cathedral properties, and diversity in church leadership.

Week in Westminster, 16th-20th July 2018

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on the value of Higher Education, and on referendums. They asked questions about attacks on Christians in Nigeria, persecuted Christian communities in the Middle East, the vocation to service, broadband speeds, and commuter rail services. Week in Westminster, 9th-13th July 2018

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on faith-based organisations delivering overseas aid and development, personal savings, the nerve agent poisoning in Amesbury, and paid tribute to the late Lord Carrington. They asked questions about when the stakes on betting machines would be reduced, embryo freezing, and the National Planning Policy Framework . In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions from MPs on ordination numbers, church schools, modern slavery, metal theft, inter-faith relations and growth of the church in London.

Week in Westminster, 25th-29th June 2018

This week in the House of Lords the Bishop of London made her first speech during a debate on disability, and the Bishop of St Albans’s Marriage Registration Bill passed its next parliamentary stage. Bishops also spoke about conflict in Nigeria, and asked questions about private finance for prisons, terrorism, and the apprenticeship levy.
