This week bishops in the House of Lords asked questions on prison suicides, development support to Iraq and help for Afghan interpreters who had worked with the UK military. Bishops also spoke on disability benefit assessments and took part in votes on amendments to the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions from MPs on Near Neighbours, same-sex marriage, Iraq, apprenticeships and ethical investment. Welcome to the Church of England’s weekly round-up of activity in Parliament.

Entrance to New Robing RoomThis week bishops in the House of Lords spoke and voted on amendments to the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill and Energy Bill. They also supported an amendment to the Immigration Bill on lone child refugees. Bishops spoke in response to the Government’s statement on Hillsborough and in a debate on the rural economy. A bishop tabled and asked a question about the impact on rural areas of small schools becoming academies, whilst others asked questions on prisoners at risk of suicide, Iraq, Daesh, drones, and the future of Bradford’s National Media Museum. Church of England Week in Westminster, 18th-22nd April 2016

WestminsterWelcome to the Church of England’s weekly round-up of activity in Parliament.

This week bishops in the House of Lords spoke in favour of an amendment to the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill, in a debate on the BBC Charter Review and paid tribute to the Queen on her 90th birthday. Bishops also asked questions about offshore tax arrangements, Burundi and Daesh in Iraq.

Church of England Week in Westminster, 11th – 15th April 2016

This week bishops in the House of Lords sponsored an amendment to the Government’s Housing Bill, and spoke during the debate on the Immigration, Energy and HS2 Bills. Bishops voted this week in divisions in the Housing and Immigration Bills and spoke during a debate on the Deloitte report ‘Technology and people: The great job-creating machine’.

This week bishops in the House of Lords sponsored, spoke to and voted on amendments to the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill, Immigration Bill and Trade Union Bill. Bishops also spoke in debates on renewable energy, maternal care and Israel/Palestine. They asked questions on fixed odds betting terminals, reception of unaccompanied migrant children, the effects of UK withdrawal from the EU, credit unions and preventing child abuse. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions on mission in deprived areas, helping ex-offenders into work, sustainable energy, women’s leadership in the church and the contribution of cathedrals to cultural and economic life. Church of England Week in Westminster 7th-11th March 2016

Welcome to the Church of England’s weekly round-up of activity in Parliament.

Westminster-abbeyThis week the Bishop of Gloucester gave her maiden speech in a Lords debate on International Women’s Day and the Bishop of Coventry led a debate on Syria. Bishops in the House of Lords spoke to and voted on amendments to the Government’s Immigration Bill and on Tax Credit Regulations. Bishops also spoke in debates on the BBC, the Government’s Housing and Planning Bill, and a private member’s bill to regulate fixed odds betting terminals.. They asked questions on starter homes, the effects of UK withdrawal from the EU and the targeting of faith-based schools by campaign groups. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered a question on the landfill community fund and took part in the debate on Sunday trading in the Government’s Enterprise Bill. They asked questions on refugees in Calais, Sudan, family reunification, affordable housing, Daesh, Iraqi refugees, Israel, and mental health and prisons. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions on former bishop George Bell and spoke in a debate on the Churches Conservation Trust.

This week bishops in the House of Lords spoke to amendments on the Government’s Trade Union Bill and took part in votes on the Scotland Bill and Immigration Regulations. Bishops also spoke in a debate on the Middle East and on a Private Members’ Bill on NHS Charitable Trusts. They asked questions on freedom of speech at universities, conflict in Burundi, sustainable technology and NHS staff. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions on pay and on celebrations for the 90th birthday of HM Queen.
