The Bishop of St Albans tabled a question on the costs of problem gambling to the taxpayer on 7th January 2021:
The Lord Bishop of St Albans [V]: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the cost to taxpayers of problem gambling.
Baroness Barran (Con, DCMS): My Lords, Public Health England has undertaken a review of evidence on the public health harms relating to gambling and their social and economic burden. Publication has been delayed by Covid but is expected in the first part of this year. We have also launched our review of the Gambling Act. We are calling for evidence on how best to reduce harms and how we will recoup the cost to society.

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked Her Majesty’s Government further to the statement in Government Response to the House of Lords Gambling Industry Committee Report: Social and Economic Impact of the Gambling Industry, published on 8 December:
- that gambling advertising did not correlate to gambling participation among 11 to 24 year olds, what plans they have to undertake a review of the effects of gambling advertising on children as part of the Gambling Act Review.
- how many gambling operators have been sanctioned due to breaches of rules committed by contracted affiliates.

Bishop of St Albans asks Government to weigh financial and health costs of gambling
The Lord Bishop of St Albans [V]: My Lords, it is true that we cannot cost the human hurt and pain, but the Statement praised the tax receipts and employment benefits that come from the gambling industry but did not mention any of the financial costs of gambling-related harms. Will the Minister assure the House that, as part of the evidence-based approach, the review will include research into the cost of gambling-related harms—for example, for the 14 clinics dealing with gambling addictions, the cost of trials and imprisonment, the cost of JSA claims and the terrible cost of suicides—to ascertain whether the gambling industry is really a net contributor to the Treasury, as the Government claim?Bishop of St Albans calls for immediate action to tackle gambling related harms

Bishop of St Albans asks about problem gambling by young people
On 18th November the Bishop of St Albans received written answers to two questions on problem gambling and young people:
The Lord Bishop of St Albans: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the findings from the Gambling Commission’s 2020 Young People and Gambling Survey; and what steps they are taking to reduce problem gambling among 11 to 16-year olds. [HL10105]
The Lord Bishop of St Albans: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the report by the Gambling Commission and Ipsos Mori Young People & Gambling 2020 Technical Report, published in August, in particular its finding that the number of 11 to 16 year-olds classified as problem gamblers had risen from 1.7 per cent in 2019 to 1.9 per cent in 2020; and what discussions they have had with the Gambling Commission about ways in which problem gambling by children can be reduced. Bishop of St Albans asks about gambling harm, housebuilding and Uighurs in China
On 10th November the Bishop of St Albans received written answers to questions he had tabled on gambling, housebuilding, and equipment used to construct Uighur detention facilities.
