This week in Parliament bishops spoke in debates on the Government’s EU (Withdrawal) Bill, and on the environment. They asked questions about income inequality, and the Rohiynga in Burma. In the House of Commons, the Second Church Estates Commissioner spoke in a debate about the renovations of the Palace of Westminster, suggesting Church House Westminster might be a suitable alternative venue. This week in Parliament the House of Lords gave a Second Reading to the Bishop of St Albans’ Bill to reform the marriage registration process, including to allow mothers’ names alongside those of fathers on marriage certificates. Bishops spoke in debates on cancer care, the NHS winter crisis, access to water in developing countries, and a private members’ bill on conscientious objection. They asked questions about the effect on families of the two-child limit and benefit cap, anonymity for those accused of serious offences, prisons, development aid to Burundi, and food imports. In the House of Commons, the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions from MPs on marriage registration, vocations, gay conversion therapy, Christians in the Middle East, counter terrorism measures at religious premises, fracking and religious education. Week in Westminster, 15th-19th January 2018
This week in the House of Lords the Bishop of Chichester was introduced and took his seat on the Bishops’ Benches. Bishops spoke in debates on the work of charities, green finance, defence and modern languages. They asked questions about the impact of the Corillion collapse on apprentices, faith at the Commonwealth Summit, displaced people in Kurdistan, UK defence capability, refugee family reunion, and development aid. In the House of Commons, the Second Church Estates Commissioner highlighted the work of the Clewer Initiative in tackling modern slavery, and answered a written question on St. Elisabeth’s Church, Eastbourne.

Week in Westminster, 4th-8th December 2017
This week in the House of Lords the Archbishop of Canterbury led a debate on education, in which three other bishops spoke about schools, early years, further education and skills. Bishops also spoke in debates on the Autumn Budget Statement and in response to Government statements on Zimbabwe, the Social Mobility Commission, and terrorism. They asked questions about social housing in rural areas, and rough sleeping. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions from MPs on her bill to enable mother’s to have equal status on marriage certificates, and on religious minorities in Egypt. This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on lifelong learning and improving mental health services for people from black and ethnic minority communities, and asked questions about Donald Trump’s sharing of material about Islam, domestic violence, mental health, waste reduction and interpretation services. This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates about increasing support for those facing financial exclusion, the EU Council Statement, post-Brexit trade and reducing the size of the House of Lords. They asked questions about support available to the homeless, an imprisoned Christian convert in Iran, advice for customers about switching energy providers, and anti-democratic forces in Syria. In the House of Commons, the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered a written question about written answer statistics and asked her own question about the new Patterson Inquiry led by the Bishop of Norwich. Parliament rose for the Christmas recess, and will return in January.
