This week bishops in the House of Lords asked questions about social care and pressures on teachers and spoke in debates on child poverty, international students, and trade and development. Bishops also spoke in debate on a Private Member’s Bill about development aid and sponsored an amendment to the Government’s Policing and Crime Bill. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner asked the DfID Secretary about development partnering with the Anglican Communion and answered a written question about land in Peterborough. Westminster-abbeyThis week bishops in the House of Lords asked questions about children’s social work, the defence estate, suicide and self-harm in prisons, flood prevention and anonymity for those accused of sexual offences. Bishops also spoke on the benefit cap, the High Court ruling on EU withdrawal, the UN’s LGBT advocate, and proposed amendments to Government Bills on child refugees and fixed-odds betting terminals. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner highlighted the role played by church schools in promoting excellence and community cohesion. They also took part in debates and votes on the Government’s National Citizen Service Bill and Bus Services Bill.

This week bishops in the House of Lords asked questions about debt management solutions, unaccompanied children in Calais, supported housing, Syria, Rwanda & Burundi and improving the quality of affordable housing. They also took part in debates on the work of the Sexual Violence in Conflict Committee, future of the BBC, the cultural importance of libraries and selective schools. In the Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered a range of questions at the monthly question time.

Church of England Week in Westminster, 5th-9th September 2016

Welcome to the Church of England’s weekly round-up of activity in Parliament.

abc-mcfall-2This week bishops in the House of Lords led a debate on banking reform and spoke in debates on school admissions and civil society. Bishops also paid tribute to the departing Lord Speaker and asked questions on executive pay, children at the Calais refugee camp and pensions for UK nationals living abroad. Church Commissioner questions were answered on children in care and churches in Blackburn. Church of England Week in Westminster, 18th – 21st July 2016

Welcome to the Church of England’s weekly round-up of activity in Parliament.

This week bishops in the House of Lords spoke on the Government’s Policing and Crime Bill and Investigatory Powers Bill, the Carbon Budget and in debates on the wellbeing of children in Gaza and the impact of leaving the EU on UK agriculture. Questions were also asked about religious broadcasting and the BBC Charter, unaccompanied children in Calais, delays with single farm payments, rural housing and development on brownfield sites. Bishops also responded to a Government Statement about the political situation in Turkey. The new Bishop of Oxford took his seat in the Lords, following his translation from Sheffield.  Parliament has now risen for the summer recess and will return on the 5th September.

They asked questions about restoring peace in South Sudan, youth volunteering and secure tenancies for young farmers. Church of England Week in Westminster, 4th-8th July 2016

This week the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely took part in a two day debate in the House of Lords on the outcome of the EU referendum. Bishops scrutinised the Government’s Children and Social Work Bill, spoke on the rural economy, modern slavery and responded to the Government’s statement on the Chilcot Report. Bishops also asked questions on EU citizens in the UK, alcohol buying, war in Sudan, development aid and university research and voted on tobacco regulations. In the House of Commons MPs put questions to the Second Church Estates Commissioner, including on out of school settings, poverty, women bishops and human trafficking.
