Westminster-abbeyThis week in the House of Lords bishops spoke about social housing, the NHS long-term plan, mental health care for children and young people,  and on amendments to the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration etc.) Bill. They voted on a Motion about the Government’s EU Withdrawal Agreement and asked questions about gambling, teacher recruitment, nurses, the female offender strategy, and fly-tipping.

Week in Westminster 21st-25th January 2019

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke about poverty in the UK, cultural and heritage services facing council cuts, and on a customs union amendment to the Government’s Trade Bill.  They asked questions on Religious Education in the English Baccalaureate, EU environmental regulations, rail services in the north east, and the welfare of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran. Week in Westminster 14th-18th January 2019

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke and voted on the Government’s EU Withdrawal Agreement, the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Bill, and the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration Etc.) Bill. They also spoke in debates on online gambling, and the effects of the Internet on children’s health.  They asked questions on Brexit, gambling by children, Yemen, Islamophobia, pensions, school exclusions, and arts education.

Week in Westminster 7th-11th January 2019

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on the Government’s EU Withdrawal Agreement, and the welfare of girls in conflict-afflicted countries. 

They asked questions on benefit reforms and the impact on children, Iranians seeking asylum in the UK, child refugees, and Universal Credit. The Bishop of Durham welcomed the Government’s announcement on the two-child limit on welfare benefits.

Week in Westminster 17th-21st December 2018

This week in the House of Lords bishops spoke in debates on the Commission on Religious Education, the treatment of people with terminal illnesses, plastic pollution, arts and wellbeing, Islamophobia, and the work of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. They asked questions on homelessness, Yemen, Brexit, Burma, sanctions on Iran, and university admissions, and a bishop  took part in a vote on an amendment to the Government’s Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Bill. Parliament approved four Church of England Measures, which then received Royal Assent. Parliament rose for the Christmas recess and will return on January 7th, 2019. Week in Westminster 10th-14th December 2018

This week in Parliament the Archbishop of Canterbury led a House of Lords debate on reconciliation. The Lords Spiritual also spoke on the Government’s EU Withdrawal Agreement, Operation Conifer, and online pornography. They asked questions on trainee nurses, Universal Credit, and international human rights. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions about Christ Church college, Oxford, and Christians Against Poverty. Week in Westminster, 3rd-7th December 2018

This week in Parliament bishops spoke in the House of Lords debate on the Government’s EU Withdrawal Agreement, and asked questions on Asia Bibi, Pakistan, executive pay links to carbon emissions, greening towns and cities, the two-child limit on welfare benefits, internet safety, and support to organisations helping Christians and other minorities returning to Syria.  In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered a question about Christ Church college, Oxford. Week in Westminster, 26th-30th November 2018

This week in Parliament bishops spoke in debates on child refugees and school funding, and asked questions on gambling-related harm, underage gamblers, tuberculosis, mental health crisis support, support for shipbuilders, and the establishment of the Church of England. They also took part in a vote on the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill. In the House of Commons the Second Church Estates Commissioner answered questions on the Northern Forest Initiative, persecuted Christians overseas, the Dean of Christ Church Oxford, the Church of England’s Christmas campaign, church social action projects, problem gambling, redundant churches, and charitable donations. Week in Westminster, 19th-23rd November 2018

This week in Parliament bishops spoke on artificial intelligence, Brexit, and on Bills relating to consent in organ donation, and making homes fit for human habitation. They also asked questions on grade inflation, the two-child limit for benefit claims, Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, and elder abuse.
