This week in the House of Lords, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishops of Durham and Southwark, spoke about the divisions in Parliament and the country on Brexit, in keeping with their joint College of Bishops letter issued on 27th September. The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham, also contributed to the debate on the Spending Round 2019.

Proceedings in the House of Lords resumed, and prayers were read by the Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury. Archbishop Justin made two contributions to debates in the House, calling for unity and transparency.
The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham, expressed shock at the Prime Minister’s Brexit update. He also raised the need for a focus on the vulnerable during the debate on Government spending.

The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, was on duty and read prayers at the start of the day. The Government responded to questions about the European Union (Withdrawal) (Number 2) Act 2019, and the Bishop Christopher called for restraint and respect.
