Bishop of St Albans asks about floods in Libya

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 17th October 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked what representations they have made to the government of Libya concerning the recent floods in that country; and what emergency provision they will be providing to them.

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon (Con, Foreign Office): The UK is horrified by the scale of flooding in eastern Libya following Storm Daniel and is committed to working with partners to deliver aid in support of the Libyan people.

Minister commends work of Church-run Clewer Initiative to combat modern slavery

Caroline 4On the 17th January 2018 the Second Church Estates Commissioner, Rt Hon Dame Caroline Spelman MP, asked a question in the House of Commons of the Minister for the Middle East. Dame Caroline highlighted the work the Church is doing to tackle modern-day slavery through the Clewer Initiative

Dame Caroline Spelman (Meriden) (Con): Will the Minister commend the work the Church of England is doing on modern-day slavery with its We See You campaign to help us all identify victims, including from Libya, more easily? All too often they are invisible to us.

Bishop of Southwark asks about help for displaced people in Iraq and Syria

On 12th May 2016 Baroness Sheehan asked Her Majesty’s Government “what evidence they have to support their claim that “pull factors” are responsible for the mass movement of people from the Middle East and North Africa in recent years.” The Bishop of Southwark, Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, asked a follow up question:

The Bishop of Norwich presses Government on Humanitarian Aid for Libya

On Monday 1st June 2015 Lord Alton of Liverpool asked Her Majesty’s Government what progress they and their international partners have made in deterring the trafficking of migrants and creating safe havens in North Africa and the Middle East. The Bishop of Norwich asked a supplementary question:

The Lord Bishop of Norwich: My L14.06.12 Bishop of Norwichords, what will become of the refugees and migrants who are trapped in Libya? Since neighbouring countries have closed their borders and current plans are to sink the boats that are smuggling people from Libya, are these refugees and migrants simply consigned to certain abuse and death?
