Bishop of St Albans asks about full fibre broadband rollout

On 11th March 2021, the Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked Her Majesty’s Government, further to their revised target to reach a “minimum of 85 per cent gigabit broadband coverage by 2025”, as set out in the National Infrastructure Strategy, published in November 2020, whether they still intend to use an “outside-in approach” to support full-fibre rollout.

The Lord Bishop of St Albans [V]: Is the Minister aware that in addition to the military’s crackdown on protesters, military offensives are taking place in northern Shan, Kachin and Karen states, causing the mass displacement of civilians? On 8th March 2021 the House of Lords considered amendments to the Government’s Domestic Abuse Bill at its Report Stage.

Bishop of St Albans asks Government about social, health and economic effects of gambling

On 8th March 2021 the Bishop of St Albans received a written answer to two questions on the links between gambling and financial, social and health outcomes:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the finding of the study in the Nature Human Behaviour journal The association between gambling and financial, social and health outcomes in big financial data, published on 4 February, that increased gambling correlates with lower financial planning, missed mortgage payments, and increased bailiff interaction; and what assessment they have made of the potential for affordability checks in gambling to produce long-term secure financial outcomes for individuals. The Lord Bishop of St Albans: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the finding of the study in the Nature Human Behaviour journal The association between gambling and financial, social and health outcomes in big financial data, published on 4 February, that increased gambling is associated with lower levels of socialisation and spending on local amenities; and what assessment they have made of the impact of online gambling on the local economy. The Bishop of St Albans asked a question on rates of domestic fish consumption and the handling of fishing quotas with the EU on 4th March 2021:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans: My Lords, there is an immediate, pressing problem for many of our fishermen, who are suffering. What are Her Majesty’s Government doing to increase fish consumption in the domestic market? Do we need a fish and chips tsar or someone to encourage people to eat fish? More importantly, in the negotiations with the EU, will the Government work towards a flexible arrangement that allows for better quota swaps?

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 4th March 2021:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the finding of the study in the Nature Human Behaviour journal The association between gambling and financial, social and health outcomes in big financial data, published on 4 February, that an individual is more likely to become a heavy gambler in a period of six months than to go from heavy gambling to abstention; and what assessment they have made of the effectiveness of existing gambling treatment programmes.
