On 3rd September 2024, the Bishop of Southwark asked a question on gender based discrimination in Bangladesh, asking that UK aid take into account the voices of Dalit women and girls particularly:

The Lord Bishop of Southwark: My Lords, the Minister will be aware that, notwithstanding the change in government in Dhaka and the protections that the laws and constitution of Bangladesh afford all its citizens, Bangladeshi women still face gender-based discrimination, and Dalit women and girls are particularly vulnerable to untouchability practices and violence. Will the Minister assure the House that UK aid in this area will now be shaped by consultations with representatives of Dalit women and girls, who rarely have access to decision-making in the society in which they live?

Bishop of Southwark asks about issues in prioritising adult social care

The Lord Bishop of Southwark: My Lords, I welcome the Minister to her post. Does she recognise that one principal reason why fundamental issues around adult social care have not been addressed in the past 25 years is not only the complexity and cost—it is because adult social care is largely invisible and lacks political priority? Do the Government intend to address this?

Bishop of Southwark asks about difficulties with introduction of eVisas

The Bishop of Southwark received the following written answer on 2nd September 2024:

The Lord Bishop of Southwark asked His Majesty’s Government what representations they have received about (1) the delay in introducing eVisas, and (2) the requirement that, notwithstanding this delay, those with biometric residence cards must apply for a replacement eVisa by 31 December.

Lord Hanson of Flint (Lab, FCDO): The Home Office continues to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including ILPA and the 3million, as we roll out eVisas and are grateful for their feedback.

eVisas are a key part of delivering a border and immigration system which will be ‘digital by default’ by 2025, a change that will enhance the customer experience, deliver excellent value, and increase the immigration system’s security and efficiency.

Bishop of Southwark asks about homelessness among refugees

The Bishop of Southwark received the following written answer on 10th May 2024:

The Lord Bishop of Southwark asked His Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the recent Refugee Council report Keys to the City 2024: ending refugee homelessness in London and its finding that in the two years to September 2023, there was a 239 per cent increase in refugees requiring homelessness support from local authorities after being evicted from Home Office asylum accommodation.

The Lord Bishop of Southwark asked His Majesty’s Government what plans they have to regulate identity tracing agencies in relation to the recovery of debt.

Baroness Vere of Norbiton (Con, Treasury): The Government wants to see fair treatment of individuals in problem debt, and there is a range of work underway across government and regulators to promote responsible practices for debt recovery.
