Bishop of St Albans asks about suicides linked to gambling

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 4th September 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government how many deaths that occurred in England and Wales in the past four years mentioned gambling anywhere on the death certificate.

Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Con, Cabinet Office):  The information requested falls under the remit of the UK Statistics Authority.

Bishop of Exeter asks about the COVID-19 enquiry

The Bishop of Exeter received the following written answer on 4th September 2023:

The Lord Bishop of Exeter asked His Majesty’s Government how the needs of the Clinically Extremely Vulnerable, as distinct from the disabled, will be addressed in the UK COVID-19 Inquiry.

Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Con, Cabinet Office): The UK COVID-19 Inquiry is independent of the Government. The process, procedure and timing of the Inquiry are matters for the Chair, Baroness Hallett.

  • what were the most common reasons for suicide cited in coroners’ Prevention of Future Death reports for each year since 2015.
  •  how many Prevention of Future Deaths reports were issued in each of the past five years.

Bishop of St Albans asks about programmes of support for care leavers in the UK

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 4th September 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government what programmes exist to support 18 year olds leaving the care system.

Baroness Barran (Con, Department for Education): As set out in the Children Act 1989, local authorities have the primary responsibility for supporting care leavers. The 2017 Children and Social Work Act imposed a new duty on local authorities to consult on and publish their ‘local offer’ for care leavers, setting out their legal entitlements and any further discretionary support that the local authority provides, such as Council Tax exemptions.

Bishop of St Albans asks about number of care homes in the UK

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 4th September 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to promote accurate recording of the number of care homes.

Lord Markham (Con, Department of Health and Social Care): The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is responsible for the accurate recording of the number of care homes as well as all health and adult social care providers that fall within the scope of registration with the CQC within England. A list of all the providers is publicly available on CQC’s website and is updated monthly. This has been the case since 2012, prior to which it was available on request.

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government how many deaths occurred in England and Wales in (1) 2019, (2) 2020, (3) 2021, and (4) 2022, where malnutrition was either the cause of death or was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate.

Bishop of St Albans asks about regulations on apprenticeships

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answers on 4th September 2023:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked His Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to ensure that all apprenticeships receive the mandated off-the-job training entitlement.

Baroness Barran (Con, Department for Education): The government has made significant reforms to the quality of apprenticeships to ensure they meet the needs of employers and bring wider benefits to the country and the economy. Apprenticeships have a minimum 12-month duration with more training (minimum 20% off-the-job) and are more rigorous and credible with employer led standards and independent end-point assessments.

Bishop of Carlisle asks about research into countering viral illnesses

On 25th July 2023, the Bishop of Carlisle asked a question about the plans for an immunisation programme against respiratory syncytial virus before winter:

The Lord Bishop of Carlisle: My Lords, I, too, welcome the Minister’s detailed knowledge of this subject. Testing it even further, if I may, can I ask him whether His Majesty’s Government have made any assessment of the usefulness of glycolipid research in countering not only RSV but other viral illnesses, including influenza and Covid-19?

Lord Markham (Con): I fear I might have been taken to the limit of my knowledge. I would like to think I know when to stop and to offer to follow up in writing.
