The Bishop of Guildford received the following written answer on 21st June 2022:

The Lord Bishop of Guildford asked Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the report by the National Commission for Human Rights Pakistan Unequal citizens: ending systematic discrimination against minorities, published on 23 May; and what plans they have to use UK Aid to increase employment among young Christians in Pakistan.

Bishop of St Albans asks about Ukrainian grain exports

The Bishop of St Albans received the following written answer on 20th June 2022:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans asked Her Majesty’s Government:

what discussions they are having with (1) the government of the United States, and (2) the EU, to encourage the government of Russia to re-open shipping lanes in the Black Sea to allow for Ukrainian grain to be exported.
what support they are offering to Ukraine to increase its (1) land, or (2) river-based, exporting infrastructure to assist in getting grain out of that country.
what support they are offering the EU as they attempt to institute solidarity lanes and ease (1) export, and (2) import, routes for Ukraine.

how many women have been detained at the Derwentside immigration removal centre since it opened on 28 December 2021.
how many women have been released into the community from the Derwentside immigration removal centre since it opened on 28 December 2021; and what support has been provided to help them access suitable accommodation.
how many women have been deported from the UK after residing at the Derwentside immigration removal centre.
how many in-person legal visits have taken place at Derwentside immigration removal centre since women were first detained there.

The Bishop of St Albans asked the following question during a debate on the private rented sector on 20th June 2022:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans: My Lords, I welcome many of the reforms. However, have Her Majesty’s Government made any sort of formal economic assessment as to whether these protections will do anything to address the higher costs of private rented accommodation, which can so often drive people to social housing? If not, can they assure this House that there will be sufficient affordable social accommodation for those who really need it?

The Bishop of Blackburn spoke in a debate on railway strikes on 20th June 2022:

The Lord Bishop of Blackburn: My Lords, I want to try to take some of the vitriol out of the conversation, just for a moment, to ask the Minister a question. Considering the number of conversations that have been going on behind the scenes, which have not produced a result and have, therefore, not prevented the strike, has any thought been given to working on a really long-term plan—not just for the rail industry but for a number of other industries that are talking about some kind of industrial action? This would allow there to be some hope and clarity in the longer term rather than immediately just trying to resolve this issue at this moment. The longer-term plan could be a real help, if that could be talked about.

Bishop of Durham asks about special educational needs

The Bishop of Durham asked the following question on 20th June 2022:

The Lord Bishop of Durham: My Lords, I recently visited a school in County Durham—not a church school in this instance—where 25% of the children had special educational needs. The head teacher pointed out to me the significance of not only the teachers but the teaching assistants, and the training that they too required, and said that there was pressure on her budget to sustain that level of staffing with some specialism. Can the Minister comment on that?

The Lord Bishop of Southwark asked Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon on 30 May (HL275), whether they have had discussions with the government of Israel regarding the international law implications of evictions of Palestinian residents from Masafer Yatta; and if they have not, whether they will now do so.

Bishop of St Albans asks about sanctions on Patriach Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church

The Bishop of St Albans asked a question on 16th June 2022, during a debate on Ukraine:

The Lord Bishop of St Albans: My Lords, it has come to a very sad state of affairs when I feel that I have to welcome the sanctions on Patriarch Kirill, given his role in leading the Orthodox Church. Having said that, it is important to keep back channels open when these things are going on, and the Church of England has close contact with the Russian Orthodox Church. Will Her Majesty’s Government work with the Church of England, through our diplomatic and other links, so that we can at least try to keep some conversations open, at the same time as rightly imposing these strong sanctions?

The Lord Bishop of St Albans: My Lords, at a time when public trust in the integrity of the Government and public life is being deeply damaged, would it not make sense for the successor of the noble Lord, Lord Geidt, to be appointed by an independent body rather than by the Prime Minister?
